In a recent environmental report released by Google on July 3, 2024, the tech giant revealed that its greenhouse gas emissions generated during services in 2023 increased by around 48% compared to 2019, and by 13% compared to 2022. The significant rise is attributed to the increased application of artificial intelligence technology. This surge not only led to higher greenhouse gas emissions but also a notable increase in water usage for data center cooling, with water consumption in 2023 being 17% higher than in 2022, amounting to around 6.1 billion liters. This situation poses a challenge to Google's aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030. Similar challenges are faced by other tech industry players like Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple, as the use of AI technologies results in increased greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. It is expected that the continuous development of AI technologies will drive energy technology reform and accelerate the growth of green energy-related technologies.
