In the Han Guang exercise this year, which the military describes as the closest to a real battle yet utilizing induced scenarios and scriptless practices, the Eighth Army Corps in Tainan has come under scrutiny for trench digging at a beach, contradicting the 'scriptless' nature of the training. Major General Mei Jiashu stated that if this action was due to unit training, it would be part of the annual exercise. Legislative Yuan has invited Defense Minister Gu Lixiong and the Chief of the General Staff to report on the 'Han Guang Exercise 40' and respond to inquiries. Mei Jiashu's appearance marks the second time in 26 years that a Chief of the General Staff has been questioned by the Legislative Yuan. Media questioned the discrepancy between the scriptless nature of the exercise and the trench digging in Tainan; Mei Jiashu clarified that the exercise employed induced scenarios with no script and that they would investigate the situation at the beach, explaining that if it was unit training, it was part of the scheduled exercises. Defense Minister Gu addressed the issue of the military drill team moving to Liberty Square and statue management, stating that appropriate measures would be taken with the support of the Ministry of Culture.
