In Kaohsiung, a high school student in their teens collapsed at home in early June due to difficulty in breathing, diagnosed with Influenza A after being rushed to the hospital, and unfortunately passed away early July after undergoing treatments including being placed on ECMO. This incident serves as a reminder from Kaohsiung City Health Bureau on the rising trend of COVID-19 and flu outbreaks, advising immediate medical attention for suspected symptoms and to refrain from work or school. The student began experiencing symptoms like fever, sore throat, and cough on July 5, initially treated at a clinic for suspected flu symptoms, but condition deteriorated rapidly resulting in respiratory distress and loss of consciousness, ultimately leading to their unfortunate death. The Bureau discovered the student had not received the flu vaccine this season, with no reported cases in their school or family, highlighting the importance of vigilance amidst the increasing flu and COVID-19 epidemics.
