A 19-year-old high school student in Taoyuan, Taiwan, fell victim to a phishing scam after participating in an online lucky draw, where he was asked to download an app onto his phone. Within half an hour, his phone sent out over 800 scam phishing texts. The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) tracked the student down after receiving reports, and he was shocked to learn he unknowingly helped a scam group. The CIB has been investigating a recent surge in fraudulent texts impersonating telecom companies, urging recipients to click on phishing URLs. A separate case involved a man who lost NT$40,000 due to credit card fraud. The CIB and local authorities formed a task force to investigate these incidents.
