Honduras requests $1.13 billion relief fund from the government after cutting ties with Taiwan and facing shrimp export crisis

Reported 12 months ago

The Honduran shrimp industry has been severely impacted since cutting diplomatic ties with Taiwan in March 2023. This has resulted in a significant drop in shrimp exports to Taiwan, with some farmers forced to shut down due to low prices offered by China. The Southern Small and Medium Aquaculture Association of Honduras is now seeking a $1.13 billion relief fund from the government to aid struggling shrimp farmers. With over 60% of farms closed and the industry on the verge of collapse, this fund is aimed to revive shrimp production levels and create employment opportunities. However, there are concerns that this solution may only benefit a small portion of shrimp farmers, leaving others in crisis.
