On the 5th anniversary of the '612' in Hong Kong, a major milestone in the anti-extradition movement, the Hong Kong government invoked the powers granted under the National Security Law (Article 23) for the first time, announcing the cancellation of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passports of activists such as Ted Hui, Nathan Law, and others who have been wanted for various charges. This move, labeled as targeting 'national security crime fugitives,' restricts financial services and property transactions with them, as well as prohibits the operation of joint ventures. The government accused these individuals of continuing to engage in activities harmful to national security from abroad. Hong Kong police caution against providing support to such fugitives, citing potential criminal penalties, while Hui, now in the UK, criticized the action as excessive as he had surrendered his HK passport during his asylum application back in 2020.
