On July 1, 2024, in celebration of Hong Kong's 27th handover anniversary, Chief Executive Li Ga-chai announced that Beijing, after 17 years, is gifting Hong Kong with another pair of giant pandas. Despite this cheerful news, China's new national security law has taken effect, allowing security personnel to inspect individuals' and organizations' phones and computers, leading to concerns among foreign companies. Taiwan, the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Korea have all raised their travel alerts. The economic decline in Hong Kong since 2019, combined with the further implementation of the national security law, has accelerated the exodus of foreign capital.
