Bestselling author Danielle Steel, who lost her son to suicide in 1997, channeled her grief into creating the Nick Traina Foundation to support those with mental illness. The foundation funds organizations providing treatment and support for people with mental illness, especially focusing on youth. Steel also launched Yo! Angel! to help the homeless, distributing clothing and supplies to those in need in San Francisco for 11 years, reflecting her commitment to helping others in memory of her son and as a parent.
