A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Hualien County at 8:30 pm on the evening of July 9, 2024. The quake was centered at a depth of 37.2 kilometers, approximately 11.6 kilometers southeast of the Hualien County government. Several areas in and around Hualien felt the tremors, with some residents experiencing brief moments of panic. While no major damage has been reported so far, the Central Weather Bureau reminded people to stay vigilant and follow official earthquake information closely, especially given Taiwan's location in the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
