Hualien Post-quake frequent rockfall, expert warns slopes may remain unstable for 7-8 years

Reported about 1 year ago

A massive stone destroyed part of the railway tracks and overhead lines between Hualien and Wandan on July 4th, prompting a night-long repair effort to resume double-track operation on July 5th. Following the earthquake on April 3rd, there have been frequent incidents of rockslides in the Hualien area, with recent ones occurring on June 21st leading to a train derailing and on July 1st and 2nd blocking the Su-Hua Highway. The head of the highway maintenance branch in the Eastern District, Lin Wenxiong, expressed concerns that due to the disappearance of vegetation along a 1000-meter slope in the mountainous region, stability may be compromised for 7-8 years, possibly up to 20 years.
