The Ministry of the Interior in Taiwan plans to increase the number of substitute servicemen to 58,618 this year, a significant rise from 6,505 last year. Amendments to the Substitute Service Act are being proposed to punish those who avoid conscription similar to how reserve military personnel are penalized. The training will include programs for disaster relief, security maintenance, shooting practice, and public safety drills, with the Ministry aiming to tackle evasion of conscription practices. Evaders may face penalties as the legislative process progresses.
