According to Reuters, despite the global trend towards reducing carbon emissions, the Indian government is accelerating the expansion of coal-fired power generation to meet the growing electricity demand. Prime Minister Modi recently formed a new cabinet, and the Energy Minister chaired a meeting to discuss speeding up power equipment orders for new coal power plants. This move is expected to lead to record-setting equipment orders for major power plants in India, with an increase in generation capacity by 31 GW over the next five to six years.
