As of June 11 this year, Taiwan has welcomed a total of 3.45 million international tourists, falling short of the initially projected 12 million due to a lack of mainland Chinese tourists. With events and international promotions planned for the second half of the year, the target remains at 10 million tourists, mainly focusing on Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, and North America. Factors affecting the numbers also include the Hualien earthquake in April and a decline in travel during April and May possibly due to the earthquake and tourists waiting for the next long holiday. The issue of the ban on mainland Chinese tourist groups is also being addressed, with a relaxation in place for past organized tours from China, but more discussions are ongoing for further resolutions.
