Italy's Sicily Island Volcano Eruption Leads to Emergency Closure of Catania Airport

Reported about 1 year ago

The recent eruptions of Mount Etna and Stromboli volcano in Italy have caused volcanic ash columns, resulting in the temporary closure of Catania Airport in Sicily, severely affecting flights. Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, lit up the skies near Catania with lava flows, while Stromboli volcano on the north coast of Sicily also erupted at the same time. The volcanic ash column reaching 4.5 kilometers high incapacitated Catania Airport, a vital hub connecting eastern and western Sicily, forcing all flights to be suspended temporarily. Both volcanoes' activities have raised concerns, with Stromboli volcano under red alert, signifying a possible worsening situation. Authorities have deployed emergency evacuation plans and more rescue personnel. Stromboli volcano, reaching 920 meters high with a base extending 2,000 meters below sea level, is considered one of the few almost continuously active volcanoes in the world.
