Japan's Secret Meeting with North Korea in Mongolia Revealed

Reported 7 months ago

According to a report by South Korea's JoongAng Ilbo on June 13, 2024, the Japanese government secretly met with North Korean officials in Mongolia in mid-May. While Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirohide Hirai refrained from commenting on the reports, the meeting in Ulaanbaatar was attended by unidentified Japanese representatives and three North Korean reconnaissance bureau personnel, indicating a potential breakthrough in economic and diplomatic relations. Despite North Korea publicly refusing contact with Japan, the clandestine meeting suggests otherwise. Relations between Mongolia and North Korea have traditionally been friendly.
