Reported about 1 year ago

On July 5, 2024, Japanese Kawasaki Heavy Industries is suspected of using funds from false trading to buy Nintendo Switch game consoles at the request of Maritime Self-Defense Force submariners. Kawasaki Heavy Industries admitted to inappropriate spending of funds through fictitious transactions under submarine maintenance contracts with the Maritime Self-Defense Force, potentially misusing the funds to purchase gift certificates, daily necessities, tools, and even fulfilling submariners' requests for Nintendo Switches. The misappropriation of funds, totaling at least tens of billions of yen over the last six years, is under investigation by the Defense Ministry and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary expressed regret over any suspicious behavior related to budget execution. The investigation began after a warning from the Osaka National Tax Agency in February 2024, with subsequent illegal accusations disclosed to the Ministry of Defense in April.
