On June 9, 2024, in Japan, there has been a significant outbreak of the 'A-type hemolytic streptococcus' bacteria, often referred to as the 'man-eating bacteria'. The number of infections has reached 977 cases this year so far, the highest since 1999. Experts warn that the bacteria is highly contagious, causing symptoms like high fever, swelling, and sore throat, with a mortality rate of up to 50%. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly and individuals with diabetes are at a higher risk of infection. The bacteria can lead to severe organ failure, shock, and death. Precautions are advised to prevent further spread.
