On June 24, 2024, the Ministry of Transportation's Highway and Railway Safety Administration Director, Huang Yun-Gui, led a team to evaluate the results of Keelung City's implementation of traffic safety improvement measures. According to the Ministry's analysis, Keelung City's accident mortality rate of 8.1 per 100,000 people in the past three years is significantly lower than the average of 17.1 in other counties and cities, marking it the lowest among 8 similar cities. Keelung City government attributes this success to their efforts in promoting pedestrian-friendly policies, such as creating green pedestrian crossings at 107 intersections, implementing early pedestrian signals at 60 intersections, and posting green footprints at 194 covered walkways to ensure pedestrian safety and maintain walkways clear. These initiatives have led to various accident data indicators far below target values, demonstrating the visible results of creating a safe commuting environment. The city government plans to continue implementing pedestrian-friendly policies and improving road safety measures to make Keelung a safe, friendly, and convenient city for all.
