On June 24, 2024, Nationalist Party (KMT) legislator Lin Chien-chi held a press conference on the urgency and importance of amending Article 24 of the Private School Exit Law. The KMT proposed amendments and fast-tracked them to the second reading, triggering criticism from private school and higher education unions, accusing the KMT of backtracking on democracy and paving the way for predatory practices by allowing underperforming private schools to continue operating. They called for the withdrawal of the proposal or for thorough public hearings and consultations before any further amendments are made to avoid private schools becoming targets of corporate takeovers or facing financial disasters.
