Reportedly, Taipei Zoo's koalas have specific preferences for certain eucalyptus leaves based on their nutritional content, variety, and origin. To sustainably provide 15 types of eucalyptus leaves for the koalas, the zoo collaborates with farmers to rotate options like narrow-leaved peppermint, red ironbark, rose gum, white ironbark, and manna gum. Excess eucalyptus leaves, not consumed by the koalas, are now recycled, extracted, and used in essential oils for mite-repellent sprays and hand wash products through a partnership with wood vinegar experts. Celebrating koala 'Fu Rong's' birthday coinciding with Taipei Zoo’s 110th anniversary, a special event at a hotel features products made from reused eucalyptus leaves, aiming to raise awareness of koalas' survival challenges due to global climate change and encourage support for conservation efforts.
