Lai Ching-te to Propose Constitutional Interpretation for Parliamentary Reform, Chiang Wan-an: DPP Uses Election Language to Hinder Legislation

Reported 8 months ago

The parliamentary reform bill recently went through its third reading in the Legislative Yuan and was sent back for review by President Lai Ching-te. However, after the parliament voted against the review, the DPP announced its intention to propose a constitutional interpretation. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an expressed that despite public support for parliamentary reform, the DPP is using various methods, including election language, to obstruct legislative changes, highlighting the importance of reform. President Lai Ching-te explained the reasons for seeking a constitutional interpretation, pointing out constitutional violations and the need to maintain a balance of powers. He stressed that the DPP's position is against expanding parliamentary powers, not against reform itself, and promised to respect the law while submitting the dispute to the Constitutional Court for judgment.
