During a recent legislative session, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te faced a setback as key bills related to parliamentary reform were voted down. Lai responded by announcing plans to seek a constitutional interpretation, leading to a surge in online discussions. However, a study by TPOC Taiwan Issue Research Center revealed that Lai's online approval rating has significantly dropped since taking office, with a majority of netizens criticizing his move. This negative sentiment was fueled by various factors such as doubts over constitutional grounds, critiques of Lai's past statements, and support for parliamentary reform. The decline in approval rating was also impacted by the failure of parliament reform bills proposed by opposition parties. TPOC warned that ignoring public opinions and prolonging the deadlock between the executive and legislative branches could further harm Lai Ching-te and the Democratic Progressive Party's public perception.
