Lithium Battery Caused Fatal Fire Leading to 3 Deaths - Experts Warn of Possible Toxic Gas in Recent Incidents, Advising Public to Wear Masks When Going Out

Reported 7 months ago

In the early morning of June 13, 2024, a fire broke out in a residential building in Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, potentially due to a lithium battery charging. Experts recommend using dry powder fire extinguishers for small lithium batteries as explosions often occur when devices such as phones and power banks start emitting high temperatures. Precautions on extinguishing lithium battery fires include using dry powder fire extinguishers for small batteries, moving the burning battery to an open area and fully submerging it in a bucket of water for better results, and continuously spraying large amounts of water for larger batteries. Experts also warn of the toxic gas, hydrogen fluoride, produced when lithium batteries burn, advising those near fire incidents to wear N95 masks to protect against respiratory issues. Various safety measures for purchasing and using lithium batteries are highlighted, including using original and undamaged charging cables, avoiding charging in hazardous environments, promptly removing chargers when fully charged, and storing spare batteries properly to prevent short circuits.
