In ancient times, widows were expected to remain faithful to their deceased husbands for life as remarriage was frowned upon. Facing social condemnation, many widows resorted to working hard during the day to exhaust themselves for better sleep at night. To cope with the long nights, they entertained themselves by playing games with beans, stones, and coins, such as scattering coins on the ground in the dark and then counting them. This tradition of widow chastity not only kept women's status low but also passed on generation after generation, further restricting women's freedom in Chinese society.
