Lonely Planet, a well-known travel guide, announced its withdrawal from China on June 26, 2024, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and company strategy adjustments. They are closing their China office and stopping all publishing operations in the country, including ceasing updates on platforms like WeChat, Weibo, Xiaohongshu, and Zhihu. The move led to an outpouring of nostalgia from Chinese netizens on social media, attributing platforms like Xiaohongshu for the decline of traditional travel guides like Lonely Planet. Despite offering detailed travel guides for over a decade in China, evolving travel trends and the shift towards digital information sources have challenged Lonely Planet's operations and sales.
