Los Angeles to Ban Students from Using Mobile Phones on Campus Starting January Next Year

Reported 8 months ago

On June 19, 2024, at 6:23 a.m., the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education passed a resolution with a 5-2 vote on Tuesday to ban students from using mobile phones during school hours, affecting 429,000 students in the country's second-largest school district. The decision aims to prevent smartphones from distracting students, block social media interference, and mitigate negative effects on academic performance and mental health. The ban will take effect in January next year, applying to all students during school hours, including lunch and other breaks, pending further details to be confirmed by the board in future meetings. Proponent of the ban, Board Member Melvoin, emphasized the benefits he saw from similar no-phone days in schools and the positive impact on students' happiness, interpersonal interactions, and academic improvement. Opposition came from Board Member McKenna, who stressed the importance of respecting ownership of significant items to students, especially those from low-income families. Similar initiatives to limit mobile phone use in schools are also being considered in various states across the U.S.
