During Japan's annual 'shunto' in 2024, the wage increase was the highest in 33 years; however, it seems insufficient against soaring prices. The Japanese government revealed that real household consumption expenditure in April increased by 0.5% compared to last year, the first rise in 1 year and 2 months. With the yen depreciating and living costs burdening citizens, dissatisfaction towards the state is widespread. Due to corruption scandals involving the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and passive reform efforts, the latest polls show Prime Minister Kishida's support rate at only 20%, the lowest since the LDP returned to power in 2012. Public discontent mainly stems from government corruption, exacerbating frustration during times of financial struggle.
