Lufthansa, Germany's largest airline, was fined a record $4 million by the US Department of Transportation for violating civil rights after denying boarding to 128 Jewish passengers wearing traditional Orthodox attire in May 2022. The airline claimed the refusal was due to alleged misbehavior by a few individuals, despite the group not knowing each other or traveling together. US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the importance of protecting civil rights in travel, while Lufthansa stated it is committed to combating antisemitism through employee training.
