During his inauguration speech on June 14, 2024, President Lai Ching-te mentioned that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other and referenced former President Ma Ying-jeou saying the same thing in a recent interview with TIME magazine. Ma criticized Lai for deliberately misquoting him, questioned Lai's stance on the 'One China' principle and the ROC Constitution, calling him out for speaking recklessly and evading questions. Ma clarified that his stance is 'cross-strait' not 'two countries,' emphasizing the distinction between non-subordination and non-recognition of sovereignty. Lai maintains that his statements are factual based on historical remarks by former presidents Cai Ying-wen and Ma, while Ma's foundation CEO refutes Lai by explaining the constitutional violations of Lai's 'New Two-State Theory,' stating that it harms cross-strait relations and people's rights on both sides. Ma expressed surprise at Lai's use of his words but criticized Lai for his misleading rhetoric and refusal to admit fault, leaving little hope for improved relations moving forward.
