The European Parliament elections, taking place for the 5th time, ended on June 9th with preliminary results showing French President Macron's En Marche party facing a devastating defeat with only 14-15% of the votes, half the amount of the far-right National Rally's 31.5%. Macron subsequently announced the dissolution of the parliament to hold early elections on June 30th, with the second round on July 7th, just before the Paris Olympics on July 26th, creating a political earthquake in France. This allows Marine Le Pen's National Rally the chance to compete for the presidency in 2027. The elections also saw other far-right parties in Germany, Italy, and Belgium making significant gains, reflecting a shift towards right-wing ideologies across Europe.
