On June 27, 2024, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) held a press conference and announced the elevation of the travel warning to Mainland China to 'orange' level, following the issuance of 22 punitive measures against Taiwan independence by China, which is seen as further escalating cross-strait tensions. The Kuomintang (KMT) responded, criticizing the move as not conducive to regional stability. KMT accused the ruling party of causing only political rhetoric and military confrontation since President Lai took office, and emphasized the importance of loyalty to the Republic of China Constitution, urging responsible governance and improvement in cross-strait relations for peaceful coexistence.
