In an effort to crackdown on stubborn supporters of Taiwan independence, Mainland China's Supreme People's Procuratorate's Deputy Chief of the Major Crimes Procuratorate, Zhang Qingbin, mentioned that with approval, it is possible to prosecute and hold court hearings even if the criminal suspects are absent. The newly implemented measures include the possibility of imposing the death penalty for severe cases of secessionism, with leaders of such movements facing life imprisonment or ten years or more of fixed-term imprisonment. Additionally, the guidance reiterates the strict punishment under the law, emphasizing the severity of the crime and exceptions to the statute of limitations, making it clear that escape from investigation or trial will not affect prosecution.
