On June 11, 2024, at 7:09 AM local time, the crash site of the Malawi Vice President's plane was discovered with the aircraft completely destroyed. Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera announced on Tuesday that Vice President Saulos Chilima's plane had crashed, resulting in the deaths of all 10 people on board. Search and rescue teams have located the crash site near a hill, but the dense fog and thick forest hindered efforts to precisely locate the wreckage. The plane had disappeared from radar screens after taking off from Lilongwe to Mzuzu International Airport and was expected to land in the northern part of the country. Chilima, a potential presidential candidate for Malawi's next elections, was among the passengers. The aircraft, identified as a Dornier 228 aircraft with the registration number MAF-T03 belonging to the Malawi Air Force, had a seating capacity of 19 people and had been involved in multiple global incidents in the past.
