On June 10, 2024, at 8:23 pm, news broke that the military aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice President Chilima went missing after takeoff from the capital Lilongwe. President Chakwera ordered a full-scale search and rescue for the Vice President and the other 9 individuals on board. Despite poor weather conditions and low visibility prompting air control to suggest a return, the aircraft disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff. International assistance from the US, UK, Norway, and Israel was offered.
