The 2-year-old Malayan tapir, named Hideo, from Yokohama Zoo, Japan, died shortly after arriving in Taiwan on June 21. The initial pathology autopsy revealed that the tapir likely died from heat stress-induced systemic circulatory failure, coagulation dysfunction, and lung edema. The Taipei Zoo is coordinating with experts to investigate the incident further and improve animal transportation safety measures for future international species exchanges.
