A man surnamed Chen, 44, broke into the home of a man named Qiu in Chiayi in the early hours of the 20th, fatally attacking Qiu and injuring his son, before retreating to a motel where he engaged in a 5-hour standoff with police and eventually committed suicide by gunshot. Chen, who had expressed on social media about his ex-wife's infidelity and the ineffectiveness of violence and impulsivity in resolving issues, ironically committed a grave act of violence himself. Further investigation is ongoing to clarify the details of the case.
