The Maui County Council in Hawaii voted 9-0 to reject a U.S. military proposal to construct new telescopes on Haleakala volcano's summit. Known as AMOS STAR, the proposed facility by the Space Force and Air Force would contain six telescopes in ground-mounted domes and one rooftop-mounted telescope. The council cited the site's sacred significance for Native Hawaiians and noted concerns about an existing diesel fuel spill. Haleakala's peak offers optimal sky conditions for space observation, sparking opposition similar to previous telescope projects in the islands that faced community resistance.
