In many McDonald's branches in Taiwan, the children's play areas, a nostalgic memory for many, are now being removed due to the pandemic, with only a few left for photo ops. Even the iconic Ronald McDonald figures are being taken down. Speculation arose online linking this removal to a past extortion case where a couple demanded 70.6 million NTD in compensation due to their child's injury in a McDonald's play area, leading to a legal battle and eventually harsh sentencing for the couple. This removal trend is seen as a precautionary measure to avoid similar incidents in the future, with some attributing it to cost-saving measures and a shift towards takeout-only services in the future.
