Marcano is the first active major leaguer banned for gambling since 1924, with the league emphasizing the importance of upholding the integrity of the sport. The players punished denied having inside information relevant to their bets, and Marcano was found to have placed over $150,000 in bets, including on Pittsburgh Pirates games while he was on the team's roster, resulting in a lifetime ban under MLB Rule 21.
