The Nationalist Party is pushing for an amendment to the Nuclear Reactor Facilities Regulation Act in Taiwan, aiming to address the power shortage following the decommissioning of Unit 1 of the nuclear power plant. The decision on extending the operation of the plant depends on establishing social and political consensus, with a focus on climate change recommendations. Even if the legal aspects are loosened, the administrative process of submitting an extension plan and undergoing safety inspections will take 2-5 years, aligning with international nuclear safety standards. The upcoming committee on climate change will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the plant's extension. Taiwan Power Company estimates an additional investment of $600 billion and an operation extension of 20-30 years if the plant continues operating.
