The NATO Maritime Strike and Support Forces announced the annual 'BALTOPS 24' multinational exercise starting on June 7th, with new member countries like Sweden and Finland participating, marking the highest recorded scale for the naval exercise to enhance deterrence against Russian ambitions. Involving over 9,000 personnel, 50 ships, and 85 aircraft from 20 NATO allies, the exercise focuses on high-intensity training including air defense, anti-submarine warfare, firepower support, amphibious landings, and nearshore patrols to strengthen defense capabilities and interoperability. With a focus on countering potential underwater threats, participating navies also deployed unprecedented numbers of minesweepers and cutting-edge unmanned surface and underwater vehicles for mine sweeping and obstacle clearance, reinforcing protection of underwater infrastructures and maritime security.
