On June 12, 2024, at 2:32 am, the Coast Guard Administration broke multiple drug cases, where drug traffickers used a Mongolian cargo ship to smuggle a large quantity of methamphetamine to Taiwan, hidden in the ship's hold. Authorities intercepted the ship and found drugs worth over millions, leading one trafficker to throw nearly a ton of drugs into the sea in an attempt to escape, but they were still caught. The Coast Guard discovered similar cases in Pingtung and Chunghua, with drugs floating at sea, prompting thorough investigations to crack down on both smuggling and local drug production activities. A significant number of suspects were arrested, including the operators of illegal drug factories producing synthetic drugs like ketamine. The operations resulted in the confiscation of drugs worth over a million, indicating a widespread drug problem in Taiwan involving both smuggling and local production.
