Nepalese Gurung People Harvesting 'Mad Honey' by Sacrificing Chicken and Performing Rituals

Reported about 1 year ago

On July 5, 2024, a Gurung man was photographed enjoying freshly harvested beehive under the Himalayas in Nepal. The Gurung people climb precarious cliffs up to 50 meters high to collect the hallucinogenic 'mad honey' produced by the giant Himalayan honeybees. Before embarking on the risky honey collection expedition, they sacrifice chickens, sprinkle blood, and perform rituals to appease the mountain gods. The honey contains Grayanotoxin, which can induce relaxation and euphoria in small amounts but can cause dizziness, nausea, and even hallucinations in excess. The Gurung people use handmade tools and ropes to carefully cut down the beehives, while also using smoke to drive away the bees. Despite the dangers, the Gurung people have been harvesting honey in this manner for generations.
