A new group of COVID-19 variants called 'FLiRT' - including strains KP.2, KP.1.1, and KP.3 - now account for over 50% of cases in the U.S., sparking concerns about a potential summer wave. These variants have mutations that may evade the immune system, with KP.2 becoming the dominant strain. Scientists are monitoring whether these more transmissible variants will lead to a summer surge, but symptoms are similar to previous strains, and vaccines still offer some protection.
