New Immigrant Basic Law Passed Initial Review, Migrants Submit Petitions with 4 Appeals

Reported 10 months ago

On June 19, 2024, immigrant workers, women, and human rights groups submitted a petition to the Executive Yuan with four appeals regarding the New Immigrant Basic Law. Last Wednesday (6/13), the Legislative Yuan's Internal Affairs Committee passed the initial review of the New Immigrant Basic Law and requested the Executive Yuan to submit its draft to the Legislative Yuan for review by June 21, along with cross-party negotiations. Various civilian groups, including the Immigration Migrants' Rights Reform Alliance, gathered in front of the Executive Yuan calling for the preservation of the basic principles in the upcoming version of the law to address the needs of immigrant workers. They emphasized four demands, such as establishing a specialized unit responsible for immigration policy and the rights of new immigrants as a secondary unit of the Executive Yuan, broadening the definition of new immigrants to include blue-collar workers, implementing comprehensive interpreter training and licensing systems, and incorporating human rights protection and anti-discrimination clauses in the New Immigrant Basic Law.
