Japan is set to release new versions of the yen banknotes starting on July 3, marking the first redesign since 2004. The old notes will still be valid for use alongside the new ones. However, the new portraits on the ¥10,000 banknote have sparked protests from a group of Koreans due to the use of controversial historical figures associated with Japan's colonial past. Despite the protests, the new banknotes will be widely circulated from July 3.
