Nikkei: China Pressuring 'Global South' to Support Unifying Taiwan

Reported about 1 year ago

During Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Malaysia last week, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar expressed support for China's goal of 'national unity.' This shift in Malaysia's stance, along with similar expressions of support from other 'Global South' leaders during meetings with Xi Jinping or Li Keqiang, signifies China's efforts to pressure developing countries to change their policies towards Taiwan. Experts suggest that Beijing is no longer satisfied with merely preventing Taiwan's independence but is now actively promoting unification. These developments in diplomatic support come amid growing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and reflect a strategy to gain international backing for China's 'One China Principle.'
