A recent study published in the European Heart Journal warns that even women with normal weight but with excess fat in the abdomen have a 3 times higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases compared to those with fat accumulation in the lower body. This study analyzed 2600 women with a BMI between 18 and 25 and found that those with an apple-shaped body, characterized by more fat in the abdomen, faced higher risks of heart disease and stroke after menopause than those with a pear-shaped body. Health authorities stress the importance of maintaining waist circumference under 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men over solely focusing on BMI as a measure of health.
