North Korea Launches 3rd Wave of Garbage Balloons, South Korea Decides to Resume Border Psychological Warfare Broadcasts

Reported about 1 year ago

On June 9, 2024, at 7:36 AM, South Korea witnessed giant balloons carrying garbage prepared to drop on the ground as North Korea began floating a 3rd wave of garbage balloons towards South Korea. This action led to a significant amount of trash landing around Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. In response to South Korea continuously floating critical propaganda balloons towards North Korea, North Korea vowed to retaliate. South Korean civilian groups and North Korean defectors began sending balloons filled with anti-North Korea leaflets featuring North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his sister, prompting North Korea to counter and resume sending garbage balloons. The situation has sparked tensions, with past actions by South Korean civilian groups leading to confrontations and anger among South Korean border residents. In an effort to address North Korea's actions, South Korea's National Security Council decided to resume psychological warfare broadcasts towards North Korea's border, providing global news, information on democracy and capital society, and interspersed with South Korean pop music within a 20-kilometer area of North Korea's border. Measures are in place for the military to collect balloons once they land.
