As the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, the delicious zongzi, dragon boat races, and family reunions will fill our lives. Amid the celebration and indulgence in festive foods, it's important to pay attention to our health, especially for those with chronic conditions. Nutritionist Mao Ruo-yi from the Nantou Hospital of the Ministry of Health and Welfare advises that one meat zongzi contains about 500 calories, and it's essential to consume in moderation. Traditional zongzi often use high-fat and high-calorie ingredients such as peanuts, pork belly, and salted duck egg yolks, lacking in vegetables. Mao suggests pairing zongzi with a bowl of boiled greens or vegetable soup for a balanced diet. It's recommended to avoid high-sodium dipping sauces when eating zongzi to reduce the burden on the body. Mao also suggests taking advantage of the three-day Dragon Boat Festival holiday for family outdoor activities like walking, cycling, or hiking to burn off excess calories consumed during holiday gatherings and prevent obesity.
